BCUR 2019

BCUR 2019 - University of South Wales

On 14th April 2019 34 QMUL undergraduate students and two members of the Learning Development team made their way to Wales to take part in the 2019 British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR). Held this year at the University of South Wales, the students were able to present an aspect of their undergraduate research, either in an oral presentation or through a poster.

With funding provided by each faculty, the students were able to get experience of presenting their research in a conference setting, and learned invaluable skills in the process. For those wishing to go on to postgraduate study, this was a great chance to practise talking about academic research in a succinct and accessible way. For others, learning to communicate effectively with an audience from various disciplines will aid them in future job interviews and careers.

...it was an opportunity to improve communication skills [and] confidence, as well as experience [a] real life conference.

Indeed, as many students noted, the fact that conference was interdisciplinary was a particularly challenging but important aspect:

I got to gain insight into different fields of study that I would not have otherwise known about.

I just think that it was very useful in terms of explaining hard concepts to non-specialists and in a very short amount of time.

For many of the students, the practice sessions that Learning Development organised before the conference were helpful for building their confidence and ironing out any issues:

The feedback [from the practice sessions] was immensely helpful

The feedback/practise sessions were very useful in providing me with tips to present to a general audience

It was good to get comments about my presentation from the point of view of a listener and a person whose field of expertise isn’t linguistics.

To summarise, as one student put it:

AMAZING! Had the best few days. Well organised by QMUL
